Ancient Greek Coins of the Gods and Goddesses have been created by the challenge coin experts at Vision-Strike–Coins. Throughout the ages historians and curious treasure hunters have been looking for ancient Greek coins from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.
Hollywood is said to be the Cult of Dionysus still performing the great opera of life. Many films have portrayed the ancient Greeks throughout history as far back as the days of silent film. However we will take a look a few that have received critic or audience acclaim.
The Immortals – 2011
Starring Superman famed Henry Cavill as the young Theseus a stonemason who heeds the words of the oracle leading to his destiny with King Hyperion played by Mickey Rourke and infamous Minotaur.
Starring Harry Hamlin as Perseus which is the personification of the Persian nation along with classic actors such as Lawrence Olivier as Zeus and Burgess Meredith as Ammon. The star studded cast includes Dame Maggie Smith as Thetis and Clair Bloom as the jealous Hera. Another classic English actor Jack Gwillim plays Poseidon as the brother of Zeus.
The Ancient Greek Coin above shows the great Kraken that Poseidon lets loose on the peoples for their arrogance that only Perseus and the head of the gorgon Medusa can stop. An old favorite from the hay day of Hollywood.
Clash of the Titans – 2010
Again we see Hollywood repackaging history and mythology for a new audience. As before in 1981 this is the story of Perseus being challenged by the gods to protect the city from being destroyed by the great Kraken. Only the head of Medusa will save them…sound familiar? This time its Aussie newcomer Sam Worthington riding the Hollywood wave as the lead role accompanied by heavy hitters like Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning ThiefÂ
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Wrath of the Titans
Sam Worthington is back as the hero Perseus along with the cast of the first reprise in 2010. This includes the newcomer Edgar Reamirez as Ares the cruel and conflicting god known for meddling or causing great despair.
Hercules – 1997
Starring the voices of Tate Donovan as Hercules, James Woods as Hades, and Danny Devito as Phil the Satyr. A comedic Disney feature animation that retells the story of Greek Hero Hercules as good as they can do. Sadly Disney has falling from grace due to the overt child grooming sexualizing our kids with their sorcery. Fantasia shows this clearly and as always hides it in plain site.
Hercules – 1983 – Lou Ferrigno
Truly a silly portrayal of this classic hero. A good movie to have a bunch of friends over a enjoy with a six pack. Hollywood dubbed Lou’s voice thinking the American audience might not think a sweet talking giant with a speech impediment was up to Hercules standards. Funny think is the ancient Greeks might have been inbred and suffered such ailments as hair lips.
Hercules in New York – 1970 – with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Should I have to comment here. Wow. A joke to say the least. Probably only worth the novelty of watch this body builder walk around being a terrible actor in New York before any studio had a clue of what to do with a person like this. Happily he found a place with Conan the Barbarian with John Milius’s genius to transform this German Nazi’s son into a superstar in American and the world. Imagine that.
