The 1st Armored Division is an armored division of the United States Army. It was formed in 1940 and has participated in numerous conflicts including World War II, the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. The division is known as “Old Ironsides” and is currently based at Fort Bliss, Texas. We honor Old Ironsides with this 1st Armored Division Old Ironsides Army Tank Challenge Coin.
History Of the 1st Armored Division
The 1st Armored Division was established in 1940 and is one of the oldest armored divisions in the U.S. Army. During World War II, the division saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Europe, where it played a major role in the liberation of Rome and the defeat of Germany. After the war, the division was stationed in Germany as part of the occupation force until it was returned to the United States in the 1950s.
