No it’s not the 5 furlong stretch where warring steeds battle to finish their races across the beautiful horse park called Saratoga. No it’s not the USS Saratoga although her namesake very much hearken to the time when the Battle of Saratoga took place. No it’s all about the Battle of Saratoga a major contest that pitted the British Empire and its Army of Redcoats against the rag tag army of the recently gone rogue independent America.

A Month Long Engagement

From Sep 19, 1777 – Oct 17, 1777 the American Army and British Empire fought. It was the climax of the Saratoga campaign and was fought in the second year of the American independence and gave an American victory over the British freeing the American country for a temporary period of time.

It included two crucial battles, fought eighteen days apart, and was a decisive victory for the Continental Army and a crucial turning point in the Revolutionary War.

Viva La France

The success of the Battles of Saratoga paved the way for the French to support and recognize the United States for the first time and to provide military assistance. Long live liberty!

Surprisingly and not much has been recorded but General Horatio Gates who led the Americans in this fight was considered for replacing General George Washington as the commander-in-chief of Continental Armies but the idea was soon squelched.

General Horatio Gates at the Battle of Saratoga

The general of the America army that fought at the Battle of Saratoga, Gates was a British born soldier and first fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763) where he was elevated to the rank of Major and then returned to England. In 1772 he immigrated to the region that is now West Virginia. Sympathizing with colonial complaints against the crown, in 1775 he was made adjutant general of the Continental Army, and in 1777 he superseded General Philip Schuyler in northern New York. In the two battles of Saratoga his army forced General John Burgoyne to surrender, partly, however, because of the previous maneuvers of Schuyler and the initiative of General Benedict Arnold. Congress next elected Gates president of the Board of War.

Battles Of The American Revolutionary War

It’s beyond important for a nation to remember its roots and where it came from. Most nations didn’t appear from osmosis and just becoming a state or form of government. Blood had to be shed and the actions of incredible men and women had to occur often with considerable consequence to both themselves and those they fought and died for. In the case of the War of Independence nothing could be truer and the actions of the few against the mighty again reappeared in the history of the United States and its Battles of the American Revolutionary war.

Its been long enough and we are due for a revolution of government as we see our great Republic being usurped by socialist scum. As Thomas Jefferson warned we are now slaves in the country our forefathers fought and died for. He also said its healthy to revolt against a tyrannical government at least every 20 years to keep it in line and below the people protecting our rights and not granting them.
